Google reports that it hosts about 40,000 searches every second. This means about 3.5 billion searches per day and about 1.2 trillion annually worldwide. Websites respond to all these searches.
The figures are beyond understanding when searches made outside of Google are added.
Wikipedia defines a website as “…. a collection of related web pages, … Websites can be the work of an individual, a business or other organization, and are typically dedicated to a particular topic or purpose…. “
The trillions of internet searches made annually access those topics.
Internet searches are made to find information.
Education has adopted the internet as a primary tool for learning. A post on the “Educational Technology and Mobile Learning” website states,
“Using websites is one of the easiest and less stressful ways of integrating technology into the classroom. There is a plethora of constantly expanding collection of resources on the web , at a variety of levels and covering an amazing array of topics.”

The creators of websites do their best to attract people to their site so content is read. Educational sites try to be interactive and exciting. How do you build excitement in children about world history? How does a website create enough interest for a visitor to stop, look and read. Websites that inform need to:

It is difficult to judge how many websites, of the billion plus that exist, are related to business. “Business” can mean many things on the internet.
Today, January 20, 2017, the “Pittsburgh Post Gazette” reports that “…. the U.S. Small Business Administration, released figures last week showing only 51 percent of small businesses have websites, despite the fact that 97 percent of consumers search for products and services online.”
The business potential of being on the internet is not yet recognized by everyone. Its estimated that $ 1 1/2 million is spent on the internet every 30 seconds.
As a consumer on the internet, I want several things.
* Security
* Honesty
* Quality Products and Services
* Ease of Site Navigation
Fifteen years ago, my son announced that he was going to be spending the summer selling things on the internet. I was upset. I told him that very few people would buy anything on the internet. I also said that someone who hid on the internet to sell things was probably dishonest.
What did I know?
People search for websites that will inform them. People search for websites that will make purchasing easier. I just searched for handmade clothing in China. In about 1 second, I was looking at the Chinese Custom Tailor Shop in Hong Kong. Amazing!!
The quality and quantity of information offered through websites is impressive. The variety of products and services found on websites is boundless. But, I have questions about websites that make up the internet.
Who are we inviting into our computers as we explore websites? Is our personal information safe. Can a virus destroy out ability to access our saved information? Can someone watch as we research? Is a site trying to trick us into parting with some of our money?
In 2016, we saw computer hacks on the U.S. Department of Justice, the IRS, Premier Healthcare, several universities, Oracle, Yahoo and on and on. If these institutions, with their security measures, are at risk, the average computer owner is very vulnerable.
Choosing a good security program is important. As well, knowing what we are opening or viewing is equally as important. When a website is secure, threats can be moderated.
With precautions, the value of the internet far outweighs any security risks.
Every parent is worried about the content of the websites their children visit. What values are promoted? What is the attitude toward diversity?
There are about a billion active websites world wide. Its almost impossible to know how many promote radicalization of some kind.
Recently, the proliferation of false news stories has been the topic of national news. There is a great deal of reading on the internet, but very little verifying of content.
Most people no difficulty telling the difference between a news article in “Time” magazine and the story about a space baby in a tabloid. Yet, the same people believe anything they read online.
Websites are valuable because of their content. But, content needs to be evaluated and verified.
Sites like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube have changed the way we relate. People separated by thousands of miles can see each other daily. We can watch a meal being eaten spoonful by spoonful.
This is both good and bad. Many people limit their relationships to those they have on devices. Some people falsify who they are living virtual lives. But, friendships are rekindled. Like minded people can easily share ideas. Families, separated by miles, can be together.
Websites can build and strengthen relationships. Its necessary to make sure those relationships are based on reality and honesty.
In 1970, I played “Pong” on a TV for the first time. A little white spot moved back and forth between two lines on either side of the screen. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. Today, I need to scrutinize a screen to see if its computer generated or a real video.
Educational games combine fun and learning. They reinforce what kids learn in the classroom. Computer games can be played individually or against other people online.
The “Urban Dictionary defines “Gamers” as “…. one who consistently spends time playing PC and/or console games, at least three to four times per week.
Online gaming can also take the form of gambling with the same fun and pitfalls of any casino game.
Online fun can take over a life. It can also promote harmful ideas and practices. Computer games are amazingly fun. But content needs to be monitored.
With a variety of web hosting sites, anyone can create a website. A personal cause can be outlined to the world. A store site can be built. Website development is limited only by imagination.

I enjoy trying something completely new, even if its unknown. A new food, new hotel, job new, new friend…. everything new can be exciting.
I have done many things from laying bricks to setting up a library. I have built houses and hunted big game, but I had never added a widget to a website until recently. In fact, at one point, while I was the director of a company, people congratulated me for managing to correct a spelling error on our company website. Working with websites is completely new to me. The word “novice” does not adequately describe my lack of experience in building and managing websites.
Affiliate Marketing
Once retired, I searched the internet for something new and interesting to do. I focused primarily on free lance writing opportunities, but was not about to ignore any paying positions.
. I saw an ad about turning a personal passion into an internet business through affiliate marketing. So, I researched affiliate marketing. It turns out that many retailers allow independent people to sell their products through, what is called, an affiliate relationship. They provide e marketing materials, the products per sale commissions.
During my search for something interesting to do, I learned that websites are hosted. I have had a personal website for a long time; I did not create that site so I did not understand the relationship between the person who “developed” my site and the company that kept it up on the internet. The thought of working with a website was completely new to me.
Blogging
I learned what a blog is while I was searching the internet. I also found a hosting platform called Wealthy Affiliate that supports “bloggers” building an affiliate marketing internet business. That’s a sentence I wouldn’t have understood 3 months ago. I decided I had nothing to lose by joining WA through a free membership. Finally, I had found something interesting to do.
The internet is an amazing tool. I am skeptical about information I find there. I spent more hours searching for books in the library, in school, than I did in class. I would get to the right library shelf place and find that the book was already checked out.
Research used to be tedious and difficult.
Information on anything is available, on the internet, with just a few key strokes. But, what can you believe?
I am skeptical about what I find on the internet. An offer about fast money turns me off faster than a mouse click. When someone tells me to check out this site or that video, I usually offer a non-committed, “I’ll look at it.” I usually don’t.
When I to look at Wealthy Affiliate (WA), I had the same response. But because developing a website was completely new to me, I decided to check it out. Why not check out a free program about earning money online?

As an internet skeptic, I tend to expect information to be inaccurate or deceptive. Claims are exaggerated. This is what I anticipated with WA.

As a skeptic, I have found that WA to be legitimate offering a free membership that leads to an internet business. There is great support from thousands of participants and continuing guidance from experienced people.
I built a website on fishing which is fun. Then I developed this site which is more practical. I have plans for two other sites.
Sometimes there is no one more obnoxious that a converted skeptic. I don’t want to be obnoxious, but I am a converted WA skeptic. Take a look. Give it a try.

“Earn online” means different things to different people. To me, it means building financial freedom.
There was no internet when I started working in 19something. The term “earn online” did not exist. I was cuttings 10 lawns a week, in my neighborhood. when I was 12 years old. In high school, I found an after school job at a small corner store for extra income. I recently retired after 55 years of full time work, part time work and two jobs at a time work. After retiring as the CEO of a California based company, I wanted to keep working doing something completely new to me, but completely on my terms. I decided to explore earning online.
I am competent with canned computer programs from word processing to data manipulation, but I never had the time or inclination to learn to build a website or, for that matter, spend much time online. A discussion with a friend prompted me to think about trying to do some kind of work online. I looked at a number of online opportunities from writing book reviews to quality assurance opportunities, but found nothing interesting enough for me to commit any of my retirement time.
I stumbled on Wealthy Affiliate (WA) and was intrigued. After taking the free course on website development, spending time implementing the course on Word Press and 
experiencing an unbelievable amount of support, I decided to earn online, at home, on websites I developed.
Fishing, any kind of fishing, is a passion of mine. I love to be outdoors. I love to be in the water, on the water or near the water be it stream, river, ocean, lake or pond. WA taught me how to put together my love of fishing and what I learned about developing websites to build an income online working at my desk, in my office at home.
It didn’t matter that I had no idea how to build or manage a website. WA helped me through every step of the process. I know my fishing site isn’t particularly deep (Sorry. I couldn’t help the pun.), but I am planning a few sites on more important subjects once I know what I am doing.
